Science Fiction for Screenwriters

Teaching a new course this weekend in Science Fiction for the Grad Diploma Screenwritign students at AFTRS, but the weekend course is also open to anyone as part of the open-program. This intensive seminar is essential for writers - experienced or just starting out, producers, directors, students and teachers who are seeking to learn how to apply the techniques and tools of the Sci Fi genre to story or production.

OUTCOMES
Students will be able to :
- Identify and exploit the key conceptual elements of Science Fiction to create compelling screen stories. 
- Recognise the common patterns and structures of SciFi cinema and apply them to their own scripts.
- Clearly recognise the unique qualities of SciFi and what separates it from other genres such as Horror and Fantasy.

COURSE PRESENTERS
Nell Greenwood
Nell is a screenwriter and development consultant with over fifteen years of international film and television experience. As a screenwriter, Nell works in partnership with her husband, Ronan Glennane. Recent credits include story writers on a two part mini series,False Witness for local producer Screentime, screened on UKTV in January 2009, and writer, producer and director on their critically acclaimed micro-budget Pride and Joy, which was nominated for Best TV Film at the 46th Monte Carlo TV Film Festival.

Mike Jones
Mike has a diverse background in screen production, writing and research. Along with experience as script editor and screenwriter in Los Angeles he has written extensively on screen industry trends and culture, penning more than two hundred published essays, articles, reviews and three books for students of screen media. His passion for the history of TV and cinema has seen him involved in developing major museum exhibitions concerned with technology and the impact of Science Fiction and fantasy movies on our culture.

Richard Kuipers
Richard is a film critic for the international trade paper Variety. He also contributes movie reviews and commentary on ABC Radio National and the webzine Urban Cinefile. Richard has produced and directed several documentaries including Stone Forever (1999), a look at one of Australia’s most famous cult films. He produced the national television program The Movie Show on SBS Television from 1992-2000.
